These are settings for exporting the Zen-Cart Mysql database.

These setting work really nicely. There may be other ways too (not sure) but I wanted to help zen-cart users visually with this graphic (click for a larger version).

Zen-Cart Notes – Backing Up, Importing, Patching Mysql – Locally or online and more…

ZEN-CART: http://www.zen-cart.com/

NOTE: This post is intended to be very brief step by step notes not full instructions. Use at your own risk.

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL ZEN_CART:

ZEN-CART: http://www.zen-cart.com/

INSTALLING A SERVER LOCALLY:

Some times it can help to install server software on your local machine for testing purposes. This allows you to build a complete shopping cart and test it out and see how it looks without being connected to the Internet. Not everyone needs to do this but it is nice to at least know that you can.

On the Windows Platform we found XAMPP to be the easiest solution.
You can also load XAMPP onto a Linux, Mac or Solaris computer if you download the correct version.

For our example we are using our Windows notes.

Install XAMPP: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
Install XAMPP in the root of the portable drive (DRIVE LETTER:/ for example) so that it ends up as DRIVE LETTER:/xampp/.
Start xampp-control.exe and start the Apache server and MySql.
Go to localhost or http://127.0.0.1 in the browser (I.E. Firefox or the like).
Check the status and secure…

LOAD YOUR WEBSITE ONTO THE LOCAL THE SERVER:
Drop your general web site files (not the shopping cart) into htdocs/
Test by going to http://127.0.0.1/index.html

At this point you should see your web site.

PREPARE THE LOCAL SERVER FOR ZEN-CART:
PHP:
Edit php.ini: (DRIVE LETTER:\xampp\apache\bin)

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load mysql XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

extension=php_mysql.dll

extension=php_mysqli.dll

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load mysql XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load curl XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

extension=php_curl.dll

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load curl XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load gd for the image handler XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

extension=php_gd2.dll

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load gd for the image handler XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load openssl XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

extension=php_openssl.dll

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX added to load openssl XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Zen-cart needs XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

output_buffering = on

; XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Zen-cart needs XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

SEARCH AND FIND (DRIVE LETTER:\XAMPP: libeay32.dll, php5ts.dll and ssleay32.dll)
Copy to c:\windows\system32

Install cURL:
DOWNLOAD Curl and unzip on portable drive in DRIVE LETTER:\xampp\cURL

EXPORTING A DATABASE FROM AN EXISTING ZEN-CART:
If you have Zen-cart setup online already you can export the database and import it locally or use it as a backup for your online cart.

LOCALLY: http://localhost/phpmyadmin/
ONLINE: Go to your web hosts phpmyadmin…

Download/export the database: Use phpMyAdmin to make a Database Backup
1. Login to phpMyAdmin
2. Select your database from the dropdown, so that its tables are displayed.
3. Click on the Export tab. (NOTE: Be sure you’ve already selected your database from the pulldown BEFORE clicking on the Export tab)
4. Now make the appropriate setting selections

The ideal settings to do a backup via phpMyAdmin are shown below.

What is not listed as checked should be left unchecked.

UPDATE: I added a new graphic (click for a larger version).

- CHECKED: Structure
- CHECKED: Add DROP TABLE
- CHECKED: Add AUTO_INCREMENT value
- CHECKED: Enclose table and fieldnames with backquotes
- CHECKED: Data
- CHECKED: Complete Inserts
- CHECKED: Extended Inserts
- CHECKED: Use hexadecimal for binary fields
- Export Type: INSERT
- CHECKED: Save as File
- Filename Template: __DB__
- Compression: “gzipped” (or whatever you prefer… gzip makes smaller files)

5. Click Go to do the export. It will give you the option to save the file to your PC. BE SURE TO SAVE IT to an appropriate spot on your PC. Perhaps even burn it onto a CD for safekeeping.

INSTALL ZEN-CART LOCALLY IN XAMPP:
Installing Zen-cart:
Install zencart in DRIVE LETTER:/xampp/htdocs/ so you end up with DRIVE LETTER:/xampp/htdocs/zen-cart/.
Browse it: http://127.0.0.1/zen-cart/
Run the Prerequisites tab.

IMPORTING A DATABASE INTO ZEN-CART:

LOCALLY: http://localhost/phpmyadmin/
ONLINE: Go to your web hosts phpmyadmin…

Login to PhpMyAdmin.

Default Username is root on the local XAMPP.

TO IMPORT THE DATABASE:
LOCALLY: http://localhost/phpmyadmin/
ONLINE: Go to your web hosts phpmyadmin… – Open phpMyAdmin
UPDATE: I added this graphic (click for a larger version).

- From the dropdown menu, select the database you wish to restore INTO
- Click on the “Import” tab (in older phpMyAdmin versions, you might have to click the “SQL” tab instead)
- Click on the Browse button, and select the file you downloaded when making the backup
- Click Go

NOTE: If you are going to be RESTORING to a server running different version of MySQL than what your backup came from, you should be careful about which additional switches you check …
You might need to ensure that you have the appropriate MySQL 4 checkboxes set, etc.
Ask your hosting company for guidance if you are uncertain.

This is the step you can trash your existing data so backup and be careful.

PATCHING/UPDATING THE DATABASE TO THE CORRECT VERSION:

If your database is a different version than you shopping cart your cart admin (when you log in) will automatically give you a warning.

You need to use the newset zc-install directory from an up to date or clean install of Zen-cart.

If you deleted the directory for some reason – Download Zen-Cart and FTP zc_install onto your server.

In the browser go to: http://www.your_domain.com/zen-cart/zc_install
Or locally go here http://localhost/zen-cart/zc_install

Login

Act like your going to install but ONLY UPDATE THE DATABASE – be sure you have it backed up though.

EDIT THE SITE AND ADMIN:
These are our own notes and what you need to do depends on how much or little you edited or customized your cart.We keep these notes handy for when we upgrade the cart and it overwrites some of our changes. This will give you an idea of where to get started though. Overright implies you have a backup copy of you customized page ready to overwrite the generic version. These notes worked well for 1.3.5 up to 1.3.8 so far…

ONLINE: http://www.your_domain.com/zen-cart/admin/login.php
LOCALLY http://localhost/zen-cart/admin/
Log in.

Locally: DRIVE LETTER:\xampp\htdocs\zen-cart\includes\templates\YOUR_TEMPLATE
Online: Use FTP and an html editor.

XAMPP is an excellent way to install the foundational base for creating powerful web sites.

What is in the current version of XAMPP?

Apache 2.2.9, MySQL 5.0.51b, PHP 5.2.6 & 4.4.8 & PEAR + SQLite 2.8.17/3.3.17 + multibyte (mbstring) support, Perl 5.10.0, ProFTPD 1.3.1, phpMyAdmin 2.11.7, OpenSSL 0.9.8h, GD 2.0.1, Freetype2 2.1.7, libjpeg 6b, libpng 1.2.12, gdbm 1.8.0, zlib 1.2.3, expat 1.2, Sablotron 1.0, libxml 2.6.31, Ming 0.3, Webalizer 2.01, pdf class 009e, ncurses 5.8, mod_perl 2.0.4, FreeTDS 0.63, gettext 0.11.5, IMAP C-Client 2004e, OpenLDAP (client) 2.3.11, mcrypt 2.5.7, mhash 0.8.18, eAccelerator 0.9.5.3, cURL 7.18.2, libxslt 1.1.8, phpSQLiteAdmin 0.2, libapreq 2.08, FPDF 1.53, XAMPP Control Panel 0.6

Here are some notes VitalBodies likes to keep handy for Ubuntu installations:

Download: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html

INSTALL:

Open the Terminal: Applications > Accessories > Terminal.

Change directories (cd) to where you downloaded Xampp (Example is Desktop).

Copy the code below:

cd Desktop

Paste the code into the Terminal: Edit > paste

Then click Enter on the keyboard.

Begin the install: (Be aware this will overwrite an earlier installation – Upgrade here)

Make sure the NAME in the code matches:
